BUILDING PROJECT

Project History

  • Following an evaluation of 4 different building designs, the structure the Building Committee proposed was a Monolithic Dome. Many factors went into this decision. Domes are strong, easy and fast to build, energy efficient, fire-proofand adaptable to meet future requirements. The building architects are TSP in Rochester, MN and the dome construction will be completed by South Industries, Menan, Idaho.

What is a Monolithic Dome building made of?
The dome is constructed of steel, concrete, and foam. The building has a tough, inflated air-form dome, polyurethane foam insulation, tied steel-rebar, and sprayed shotcrete. Domes are inherently strong and very safe from fire and high winds.

Will there be windows in the building?
The plan is for the dome to be built on top of "stem walls" which will allow for windows. Our dome design will have some similarities to the Johnson Creek School dome in Wisconsin, which also has windows.

Is a Monolithic Dome low maintenance?
The dome shell is low maintenance - not zero maintenance. There are no gaps for mold and mildew to grow. Termites, bugs, and rodents leave it alone because it isn't edible. The foam layer on top will need some upkeep and may require re-coating every 15-20 years.
